Gratitude. Sometimes we find ourselves in situations which seem to obviously demand gratitude – like finally getting water to the Bingham Academy campus after a week in Ethiopia without any! That’s what my SIMCO buddy Ryan just experienced. I’m sure lots of people were grateful that Ryan, and everyone else, could finally shower. Yet, I wonder how often I miss opportunities be to thankful, perhaps in moments where it’s not so obvious? When times get rough and stressful, I confess I’m not as likely to have an attitude of thankfulness or gratitude. Maybe that is when it is most needed.

“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.” – Colossians 2:6-7

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
– Colossians 3:15-17

According to God’s word, it is because I have Christ Jesus as Lord that I can be overflowing with thankfulness, and that is not dependent on my circumstances. I can give thanks to God in whatever I do, even when it’s not exactly what I want or things aren’t going as I planned. Easier said than done for someone who is a recovering perfectionist, among other things.

I am thankful that yesterday I had a dear friend available when I felt a bit beaten up by circumstances. In her wisdom, she admonished me to return to Truth (God’s word) to see my situation more clearly. It was then that I could be thankful for the situation, when I remember Whose I am and could truthfully state that I still desire to be about that which He has for me. The evil one likes to distract us from Truth and often attacks at our weakest link. He even has a terrible sense of timing to boot. Praise God for brothers and sister in Christ who can point us back to Truth. That’s what I’m most grateful for today.
